The End of a Summer

Heinrich Heine describes summer's departure as a season in which, more than any other, moments of parting weave their way into the days. In his poem “The End of a Summer,” poet Günter Eich explores transience, nature's autumnal cycle, and the patient acceptance of death. In his photographs, titled »Feelings. Gefühle. Between Heaven and Earth«, Uwe Winkler embarks on a personal journey through the final weeks of summer.

The photographs were taken over a period of ten years. At the beginning was the unexpected death of his mother, and at the end, the death of his father. In between were years of caring for his father, of slowly saying goodbye, and of regaining strength in various places across Europe. Nature »between heaven and earth« as places for reflection and contemplation. The photographs express the quiet melancholy of saying goodbye, the tender moments of transience and remembrance. The photographer dedicates the series to his late parents.
